Best Snacks for Breastfeeding
This breastfeeding snack list contains the best snacks for breastfeeding mamas. As breastfeeding moms, we need snacks that are easy to grab, (somewhat) healthy, and that we can eat with one hand.
Trail Mix
I love trail mix anytime, but this is a great grab-and-go snack for breastfeeding moms. You can keep a few packs in your nursing basket, in the car, and in the diaper bag. They’re healthy (mostly), and they’re a yummy blend of sweet and salty.
Beef Jerky
I love beef jerky- it’s one of my favorite snacks even when I’m not breastfeeding. I like the fast protein without all the junk. I also love variety packs because I can get bored with one flavor pretty quickly. This snack pack variety pack of Jack Link’s beef jerky is one of my favorite breastfeeding snacks.
Granola Bars
I love making granola bars, but when I am home with a new baby, trying to figure out breastfeeding, I just don’t have the time or energy. Having a variety of different types of granola bars is key for me. These are some of my favorite breakfast foods for breastfeeding moms.
Lactation Bites
I was gifted a box of these MilkMakers lactation cookie bites with my last baby. They were pretty tasty! I didn’t eat them long enough to know if they boosted my milk supply, but they were a yummy snack as a breastfeeding mom. Oatmeal is always a bonus for breastfeeding!
Dried Fruit
I usually only eat dried fruit in trail mix, but occasionally, I like to eat it plain. Dried fruit is a convenient snack for breastfeeding moms because it’s easy to grab and eat when you have a free minute. It’s also a great way to bust a sweet tooth and avoid other sugary snacks. I do recommend choosing wisely, because a lot of dried fruit can be really high in sugar.
Mixed Nuts
Any kind of mixed nuts is a great addition to your breastfeeding snack collection. When you get a craving for a salty snack, mixed nuts are great because they have protein, healthy fats, and lots of great minerals for your body.
Dark Chocolate
Another great (healthy-ish) way to calm your sweet tooth is with some dark chocolate. Hormones can be crazy after having a baby, and even more so when you’re breastfeeding. Keep some dark chocolate pieces close by to keep cravings in check.
Veggie Chips
Popcorn
Keeping with the crunchy snack pattern we have going, popcorn is a great breastfeeding snack. It’s super low in calories, satisfies the need to crunch something, and comes in a variety of different flavors.
Garbanzo Beans
Fruit Crisps
I love everything about these crispy fruit pieces. It’s fruit, which is great, but it’s also airy and crunchy, which makes it a special treat. This variety pack of crispy fruit pieces is made in the USA, is ONLY fruit, and comes in mixed bags.
Squeezable Almond Butter
A quick and easy bedside table snack is squeezable almond butter. These packs are easy to leave on your bedside table, in your breastfeeding basket, or in your purse. They’re great to take anywhere!
Cheese Crackers
This variety pack of cheese crackers snacks is a great addition to your breastfeeding snack collection. With several different flavors to choose from, you can have a different snack every day of the week!
Healthy Snacks for Breastfeeding Moms
Prepared Fruit
I love a loaded fruit salad, but that isn’t convenient when trying to breastfeed your baby. Berries, apples, bananas, grapes, watermelon, and tangerines are great nursing snacks because they’re easy to grab and hold while feeding your baby. One thing to note here- some fruits have been tied to colic in babies. So be cautious of how much fruit you’re eating if you have a baby who has colic.
Prepared Vegetables
Cucumbers
Nuts
If you need a breastfeeding snack with a little more protein, consider having nuts on your breastfeeding station. Pistachios, peanuts, almonds, and walnuts have lots of great nutrients that are beneficial to breastfeeding moms.
Cheese Sticks
A great source of calcium, individually wrapped cheese sticks are an easy-to-grab snack for breastfeeding moms.
Hard-Boiled Eggs
A great source of quick protein is hard-boiled eggs. I like to boil a dozen at a time and have them peeled and ready as a quick garb snack.
Edamame
We all know that we aren’t always eating when breastfeeding. I want to share some other snacks for when both hands are free. Here are some yummy postpartum snacks for breastfeeding.
Greek Yogurt
Whether you’re putting it in a smoothie or loading it up for a fruit and yogurt parfait, Greek yogurt is an amazing snack for breastfeeding moms. It’s packed with lots of protein and great vitamins too!
Cottage Cheese
Also packed with lots of protein is cottage cheese. You can buy individual cups, or you can even make ice cream! This is a new snack to me, so be sure to share your favorite ways you use cottage cheese as a snack!
Hummus
Hummus is a great snack that can be eaten with veggies, pretzels, or chips. It comes in a tub, or you can buy it in individual servings as well!
Oatmeal
I know a lot of people who enjoy eating oatmeal for breakfast. But oatmeal with some dried fruit and nuts makes a great after snack for breastfeeding moms.
Gluten-free Breastfeeding Snacks for Moms
As a fellow mom who eats gluten-free, I know the importance of finding breastfeeding snacks that are gluten-free. I didn’t want to leave you out, so I made sure to create a special list just for you!
Lactation Smoothie
Rice Cakes
Granola Bars
Another gluten-free snack I love to eat is granola bars. These IQ Bar granola bars have all the things our bodies need and skip all the junk.
