Bible Studies for Moms

Being a mom is hard.

There. I said it.

Being a Christian mom can be even harder.

When you’re trying to raise your kids to know Jesus, all the while trying to nourish your own faith walk, it’s easy to get lost.

I lead a Bible study for a group of women every year. Depending on the season, we select a Bible study for women that works for us. Sometimes, it’s a daily women’s Bible study. Other times, it’s more focused on a season of motherhood.

I’m so grateful for the incredible women who have taken the time to write Bible studies for women that feed my soul. And I am hoping they’ll be fruit for your soul as well.

The women’s Bible studies I am going to share are Bible studies I have personally completed, with the exception of 2. I want to share Bible studies that have fed me spiritually in some of my hardest seasons of motherhood. My prayer is that they’ll do the same for you!

Topical Bible Studies for Women

Brave and Beloved

My absolute favorite Bible study I have ever done is Brave and Beloved

Starting at the very beginning, you will find a guide on all the different aspects of the book. You’re encouraged to Learn, Read, Reflect, and Pray. The book is made for consumption, not just reading and passing through. You’re encouraged to really dig into the big and see what it has for you.

Brave and Beloved gives you a real-life picture of what life was like for women in biblical times. You’ll read about their household setups, expectations for marriage, children, work, education, and worship. It’s fascinating how similar, yet how very different their lives were.

Moving on, for each chapter, you’ll learn the who, when, and where of each woman featured in the book. You’ll tear through scripture about each person, and work through questions to help you better understand what was happening at that time.

I learned so much by sorting through what was given in the book, and then doing a deep dive into articles and other books about more of what was going on in the world at the time.

Women of the Word

I am a big fan of Jen Wilkin. I appreciate her approach to studying the Bible, and I have always enjoyed her Bible studies as a mom. Women of the Word is a Bible study about figuring out who you are as a believer and studying the Bible on your own.

You’ll work through several sections, the most notable being Purpose, Perspective, Patience, Process, and Prayer.

With purpose, we know that all things done with a defined purpose turn out far better than things we randomly go for. It’s natural to have a purpose, and our purpose should be all things holy.

With the right perspective, we can approach life through the lens of scripture. You’ll dive into the skills needed to understand the who, what, when, where, and why of scripture. The book will encourage you to actually write these things down, so you can see the bigger picture.

Patience is a virtue; we all know this. But being a patient person is hard work. Instant gratification has become part of our culture, and breaking it is out of the norm. We first need to be patient with ourselves. As we develop patience for ourselves, we can become better learners in our quest for knowledge. Patient study leads to growth.

Ready to be challenged? Many Bible studies have you read and reflect. But for this book, you’ll need to read and then own the text. Then try to interpret what the text is saying and figure out how to apply it to your own life. This will require growth, no matter your stage of faith.

I won’t give away everything. But just know this book is going to challenge you and your understanding of how to study and interpret scripture.

The Well-Watered Woman

The Well-Watered Woman is a Bible study for moms about growing yourself as a believer. This is a great beginner Bible study for women.

This book is broken down into 3 sections: The Well, The Word, and The Way.

The well represents the moment we accept Jesus into our lives and he begins to fill a void we have always had. The word is using God’s word, scripture, to help us become satisfied. And then the way is a reminder that God is with us every step of our journey.

What I appreciate most about this women’s Bible study is that it wants you to take a real look at yourself. Are you exhausted? Are you at the end of your wits most days? Do you long for rest that seems impossible to find?

When we stop looking at the “why me” and start looking through the lens of why God made us just for this, we can see our trials through a different approach. When we feel like we have nothing left to give, God wants us to bring our nothing to Him. He wants even that, and sometimes we forget that part. God wants it all.

As you move into the “Word” section, hold onto your pants, because you’re going to be slapped into reality. It starts by simply talking about our phones. Yep, it goes there. When our phones replace time we COULD, and SHOULD, be spending with God, we need a reality check.

When you get to the “Way” section, it’s a reminder that we are all works in progress. As we walk through life and continue to try to fulfill our calling, God still wants us in the Word, and we need to be there.

Jesus & Women

Another great Bible study for moms about Jesus and his interactions with women is Jesus & Women.

This is one that I cannot speak to personally, YET, because it’s on my list to read. But I have heard really great things about it, and so I wanted to make sure it was included in my list. Once I have worked through this book personally, I will come back and share some thoughts. But for now, be sure this Bible study is on your list.

God. Gifts. You.

If you need a short and sweet women’s Bible study, take a peek at God. Gifts. You. Although this is a short, 6-week bible study, you’re going to dig in and put in some work!

Every week is broken down into daily assignments. You’ll read scripture and work through questions to have a better understanding of how God is calling you to use the gifts he has bestowed upon you.

So why would I choose this as one of my recommended Bible studies for moms? Great question! As moms, we get so caught up in doing everything for everyone else, we can easily neglect our own faith journey.

But this book will allow you the time and space to be reminded that although we are called to be mothers, we’re also given other gifts that God wants us to use.

Parenting- 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family

I LOVED Parenting, 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family. This is one of the first biblical studies I read as a parent. Maybe the rocking chair drew me in, I don’t know, but I am so glad I picked up this book.

If you feel like you’re constantly spinning your wheels and getting nowhere, your house is a mess all the time, you aren’t sure what day of the week it is, and you think you may have lost a child in your own house, this book is for you.

What I appreciate most about this book is that it encourages you to take a look at yourself not only as a parent, but as a person- a child of God. Without recognizing this, we try to find our identity in other ways, ways that are often of the world.

As parents, we can get lost in parenting, because it’s constantly changing, and the ways the world tells us to handle things is often not what God would have us do.

Children are born into the world as sinners. As parents, it’s our job to guide our kids to a solid understanding of truth and the “why” behind choosing to behave in a way that is pleasing to the Lord.

The book does a much better job of explaining everything, so please take the time to read this one. It will help build you up as a mother and encourage you to take the time to sit with your children and work through hard things when they’re little, so that with time, it will get easier.

Mama Bear Apologetics

Mama Bear Apologetics is a call for mommas to rise up.   This isn’t necessarily a family Bible study, but it’s a great book about how to be more intentional with your parenting according to God’s word.

What this book is designed for is reflection and conversation with fellow mommas who are in the trenches with you daily.

I appreciate that this book has multiple contributors, so you get several points of view on different topics and ideas.

I’m honestly not sure how to describe this book well, other than to say, just read it. It’s worth your time.

There are some fun takeaways that I like to keep with me. For example, PAWS- Praise, Admit, Worship with Thanksgiving, and Supplication. A simple way to work through prayer.

With school heading back into session, now is a great time to spend some time breaking down the lies the world tells us and our kids, and this book is a great place to start.

Foundations: 12 Biblical Truths to Shape a Family

If you need a book to help draw your family back to Jesus, I recommend Foundations- 12 Biblical Truths to Shape a Family.

Every chapter of this book focuses on a theme. For example, Love God, Hate Sin, Be an Encourager, Give Generously, Cultivate Praise, etc.

Each of these topics are things we as mothers need to be modeling for our children. I appreciate that these are things we can immediately begin working on within ourselves and also with our children.

Ideally, you’ll study one foundation per week. There are 5 short lessons for each foundation- Monday through Friday. Each day is only 2 pages– a page to read and a page of questions to think through. Very simple.

This would be a great beginner Bible study for moms that doesn’t require a lot of time and is very straightforward.

A Year in the Bible- Bible Studies for Women

The Bible in 52 Weeks

As a mom, it can be hard to make time for ourselves. A simple way to do this is to have a routine of reading the Bible. The Bible in 52 Weeks is a yearlong Bible study for women. This is a great book for someone who is trying to figure out how to study the Bible for beginners.

A Beautiful Year in the Bible

Another great option is A Beautiful Year in the Bible. You can read the entire Bible in one year with this book.

Every week, you’re given several groupings of scripture to read and reflect on. Every week is broken down into days, so you aren’t left trying to figure out how to do that yourself.

At the end of each section, you’re given discussion questions. So this can even be a book you work through with a group of women who also want to grow. It’s super easy, especially if you’re a new believer who just wants to read and understand better what’s in the Bible.

There really are some incredible Bible studies for women. Where you are in your faith walk will likely determine which women’s Bible study is going to meet you where you are. Maybe you’re in a season of rest, and you’re ready to dig deeper into scripture and find what God has for you.

Maybe you feel like you’re in the trenches and you need to be reminded that God has a purpose for you, even in this. Be encouraged that there is a Bible study for you also. No matter what, God is with you.

I pray you have found the Bible study that is going to water and nourish your spirit!
